Day 6: Am I Gullible?

Day 6: Am I Gullible?

This is part of a 7-day commitment during Lent 2024.

I didn’t feel good in my dreams. I woke up and the feeling persisted. I shrugged it off and went about my day.

What should I write today? I thought of my writing draft: “False Teachers of Christ”, and my dreamcame to mind! I am going to write about False Teachers.‘.

On second thought, the dream didn’t quite seem to be False Teachers. God, what is the dream about?!Verses in 1 Timothy came to mind. Even my dream about false teachers carries their spirit of confusion.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

1 Timothy 4:3-4

In the dream, I was queuing up to meet or get the autograph of a female worship leader (a caucasian from another country). When it was my turn, two other people and I got to sit at a small table with her to drink coffee and talk. I talked to her, while the other two were quiet. I was still proud thinking the leader and I could hit off well, but not them. When we were on the topic of irregular meals, I talked about my girl’s primary school’s weird meal timings of recess, snack break and lunch. Even before I reached lunch, I could see the disinterest and wandering mind. Suddenly my hubs came to the table and said this person I’d been talking to was not the worship leader. My mouth dropped, I had been duped. The scales dropped off, and I felt in spirit that he was the male boss of a record label.

We’ve heard how record labels package singers to appeal to the masses. It might go against what the singers want to do or even against their personalities. Whatever works to bring in the money and fans. Could this be happening to the Christian worship leaders too? Or even celebrity pastors? Are we talking to the bosses instead of the leaders? Or leaders only interested in showmanship may have the charisma to start conversations but are actually not interested in people or hearing them out.

I didn’t feel good because I didn’t think I would be duped. In the news, we read that even the young and well-educated fall for scams. We read about people falling into scams but didn’t think we would fall into one.

Am I gullible? Was God trying to tell me that in the dream?

Scams are now more sophisticated. So are false teachers. Or perhaps, it’s not so obvious nowadays. Half-truths in the teachings – the biblically sound parts to cover the erroneous ones. Or doing many good works and ministries to display the “fruits” but they are artificially planted and not growing from the true vine of God.

How then do we discern? Or do we just listen to what our itching ears want to listen to?For the next sermon or teaching you hear or read, even the articles on this website, bring it to God and His word. Don’t accept it wholesale.

Read the bible yourself to be equipped with the sword to cut and divide what belongs to God and what is not. The Holy Spirit will guide you. God has given you the wisdom to receive what’s good for your soul. And in the process, we might need to accept that some things we have believed in are wrong, be it the teachings or teachers. Will we have the humility to accept that?

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
