Shema Rhema: Hear the Spoken Word

Shema // Hear (Hebrew)
Rhema // Spoken Word (Greek)

Shema, “hear”.

Rhema, “that which is or has been uttered by the living voice, thing spoken, word.”

The Rhema word is when a particular verse or portion of Scripture jumps out to you and speaks to your spirit and life. You could have read it many times, but now you have a new revelation. Thus the Spoken Word.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord is your God; the Lord is One.”

Deuteronomy 6:4 (ESV)

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Romans 10:17 (ESV)

“Why should we hear the Word of God?”

Head over to this post “Your Word in Psalm 119“. I have listed down verses of Psalm 119 that contain the words “Your Word”.  These verses should be self-explanatory for “Why should we hear the Word of God?” Of course, certain verses might need more context and that’s for you seeker to seek it out. 🙂

I listened to a sermon and thought I would preach it differently. It’s easy to say that, but hard to actually flesh it out with words. During my quiet time, this website (shema-rhema.com) I had set up weeks ago came to mind. I had left it to collect dust on the World Wide Web while I waited for further instructions from God.

In a lightbulb moment, I had the idea to write my re-imagined sermon on this website. But with thousands of things calling out from my to-do list, I sort of needed confirmation to know that I would be stewarding my time in the right direction.

I asked for a bible verse about writing and this came by.

I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:

He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.

1 Timothy 3:14-16

I am not a pastor. I am not a ministry worker. I am not even a theologically trained layperson. It sounds impetuous to me to put this verse here – as if I am on some authority to dictate how others should behave in church.

But all children of God can hear from Abba Father. So I come humbly as a daughter and servant of God, who had gone through the trenches of breaking, the potter’s hands of moulding, and the school of Holy Spirit’s teaching. By prayer, I hear. By faith, I write and speak.

If something I write resonates with your spirit, tell me to encourage me. If something doesn’t agree with your spirit, seek God’s wisdom and correct me in gentleness. Your written comments, like your tongue, also have the power of life and death. Let’s encourage one another and build one another up.

May you be blessed as you read the words on this website.
