This is part of a 7-day commitment during Lent 2024.
“Give your voice to God,” preached Pastor Mark Varughese. A Rhema moment hit me.
He was talking about worship in songs, using our voices to sing and worship. But at that moment, I felt it meant my voice to speak out. Subsequently, God peeled the onion and revealed how my voice had been covered up layer by layer.
The voice that was hushed by others. Then it was muffled and then muted by me. That voice I have become ashamed of and hid it, later forgotten.
The outer voice became softer, while the inner voice became louder. The inner voice has always been there, I just didn’t realise how much it dictated my life until recent years. For me, this inner voice is dominated by the inner critic.
I’ve read parenting materials enough to see this phrase, “The way we talk to our children becomes their inner voice.”According to healthysenseofself.com, “The often-repeated verbal and nonverbal messages that parents, knowingly or unknowingly, transmit to their children become hardwired in the child’s mind so that it is perceived as an unquestionable truth about and by the child.” I also found scientific literature about this.
It so happened that soon after I had the topic for today, I came across a paragraph that well-described the power of that inner voice. The book “Girls Just Wanna Have Funds” wrote, “We tell ourselves stories about who we are and what we’re good at. In many ways, these stories define us, both to ourselves and the world around us… small edits to your personal narrative can have a big impact on your life.”
Our parents are not perfect to give us that perfect inner voice. But God can.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2
We go to God to have our minds renewed. We can change our inner voice when we meditate on the “whatever things” mentioned in Philippians 4:8.
As we submit our thoughts/inner voice to God, He can change the stories we tell ourselves. From an inner critic to an inner cheerleader/lover.
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
Philippians 4:8
Then, there’s the flow from the inside out. The inner voice influenced by our Heavenly Father will change the tune and volume of our outer voice too – to speak in His heavenly language of wisdom, love and grace.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
John 7:38
Let’s take one small step at a time. What is the one thing your inner voice is crushing you with? For example, I can’t do anything well, I’m a good-for-nothing. Bring this to God and ask Him to show you the truth. Replace the one thing with God’s truth and meditate on it.
