I’m currently on vacation with my children, and I was reminded of this joke some parents like to re-share on their social media, it goes along this line: going on vacations with children is just parenting at another location. I re-shared and tagged my husband because we can both resonate with this.
Then I thought of another similar but unrelated advice: your problem will still be there, even if you move to another country. Just in case, I’m not suggesting my children are a problem. 😉
I used to want to live and work or study in another country, best if I could migrate. However, I never felt the peace to do so. After so many years, I looked back with insights and realised it was because I was trying to escape from some of my underlying issues and start afresh elsewhere. I thought the problems would magically be resolved once I was in another country.
But thank God I didn’t force my way to another foreign land because the issues would have been better dealt with if I stayed in my home country. If I had just left then, I would have migrated those problems and issues over too. The baggage would still be there if I didn’t deal with it at its roots. Worse still, the issues might be exacerbated because of the transitions from the move and the lack of a support system in the new land.
Dealing with the root of our issues will help us to have a healthier root system. The roots of a tree perform many important functions and are crucial for the tree’s health. Bad roots will lead to a bad tree which would then bear bad fruits. Similarly, if our roots are healthy and good, we will grow as good trees to bear good fruits.
You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?
Matthew 7:16-20 (NKJV)
Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
Is there any issue God is speaking to you about? You might want to ignore it and sweep it under a carpet or go to another country to “close” the chapter. However, God will guide you patiently like a gentle shepherd, just like how it took God so many years to dig out some of my deeply buried issues (some I did not even know I had!) and loosen the knots of my heart. I believe that our surrender in Christ will lead to our victory.
