Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know
Well, now they knowLet it go, let it go
Let It Go Song by Idina Menzel
Can’t hold it back anymore
When I first heard this song in the movie “Frozen”, I teared. The words resonated so much with me. This was how I lived my life, “Be the good girl you always have to be.”
Being trained to be the good girl to avoid scoldings and earn praises, I had to be a likeable person. If I’m disliked, there must be something wrong with me. I want to win the approval of other people. The good girl who is uncomfortable with conflicts.
The “bad” parts that made part of us are usually unaccepted and suppressed but not gone. That’s where the public and private personas start developing – how you behave at home and outside is different. Social media took it to another level with an online persona. The most curated online persona can differ from how a person is in real life with the public persona. Ultimately even the private persona at home can be different from the true inner self.
We put up different masks to win the approval of men, or the envy of others. In actual fact, if we only live for the approval of God, we will be so much more rested and free – the truth will set us free!
For me, I always felt I should keep a good reputation to win people to Christ. However, it’s hard to sustain it because of my fallen nature, and a too-perfect image can come across as a facade or inauthentic. In any case, I don’t need to help God to put up a show to win other people.
God cares for me more than what I can do for Him.He is more concerned about my inner self than the works of my hand. Our outward will naturally be more like Christ if we allow God to work on the innermost depths of our self. Let Him change us, inside out.
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
1 Thessalonians 5:23
It can be painful during the moulding process, but the results will be beautiful. Instead of a good reputation, you would have a Christlike reputation. And this reputation would be real and sturdy because it’s from the inside out. Would you open your heart today for God to work on the inside out?
