Goodness in Bad Curveballs

Goodness in Bad Curveballs

During the past week, I was reminded of bad ‘suddenlies’ in life – when things go the other way from my previous ‘Suddenlies‘ post.

Recently,

We visited a relative who had physically deteriorated badly within a short time.

When the nurse drew blood from my arm for blood tests, I cringed as I recalled how I suddenly fell ill a few years back and almost expected to die. Then my husband was referred to the cardiologist because the health checkup saw a blockage to the heart. We were anxious. Thankfully, it turned out not to be that serious but he got to watch out for that culprit of high cholesterol.

A colleague from my husband’s team suddenly passed away – young and jovial, with new chapters waiting for him in life.

Life can throw you bad curveballs.

There are teachings about bad things happening as a punishment from God. On the flipside God is good, pray and everything will be good.

I have been on both sides. I only expected bad things from God, because I don’t think good things will happen in my life. I got weighed down by negativity. Then I switched to the other side and expected only good things from God. I got disappointed when things didn’t turn around.

What should I believe in then?

And a simple truth suddenly clicks. I don’t expect the good or bad things from God but the goodness of God, regardless of my circumstances. God is the only constant.

The Lord is good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble;
And He knows those who trust in Him.

Nahum 1:7 (NIV)

I should not expect bad or good things from God – because with our limited perspective and wisdom, we don’t see the whole picture of how all things work together for the good of us who love Him (Romans 8:28). Just like how parents stop a child from eating excessive sweets because they can see how it’s going to harm the child in the future – the hyperactivity, the bad tooth, the diabetes. The child only knew he/she has been denied of good things.

Instead, I should expect the goodness of God for me, regardless of my circumstances. I should trust in Him that all things will work together for the good.

If you are thrown a bad curveball, know that God is good, all the time. He is the Father who loves you. In utter despair, run to Him and not away from Him. Lament and cry to Him. His loving arms are extended to you, waiting to comfort you and give you the peace the world cannot give to you.

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

Matthew 7:11 (NKJV)
