Be a Circling Eagle

Be a Circling Eagle

I was lying down looking at the clouds float by. Slow living. 慢活。It’s something I want to live out this year. Yet as I lay there, I couldn’t help but think I was wasting my time. Life was floating away.

As I quieten my soul, the stressors slowly lose their grip on my body. My body relaxed and I started to enjoy the peace of the sky. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw an eagle circling nearby. The eagle seems to be staying at the same spot, yet it’s not. It’s getting closer and closer to me. It’s advancing.

I recalled Ps Joseph Prince’s mention of the spiral staircase. When climbing a spiral staircase, we would seem stuck in a spot but in fact, we are moving upwards. We are circling a small area, but gaining much in height.

I googled, “Why do eagles fly in circles?”

“Eagles fly in circles to stay inside the thermal column that helps them gain height without effort. By doing so, they can stay aloft for an extended period without even flapping their wings. Hence, they always try to remain inside the thermal column by creating flying circles in the sky,” wrote birdsadvice.com.

“Birds take advantage of warm, rising air currents, called thermals, to lift themselves into the air, enabling them to soar at great heights. Soaring birds cover vast distances while expending a minimal amount of energy, as the lift from the thermals does much of the hard work for them,” wrote birdfact.com.

I heard this from a pastor before! Something along this line, “Eagles don’t flap their wings in a frenzy, they glide in the sky with ease and rest.”

But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up (soar) with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31 (nkjv)

Bringing this eagle fact to Isaiah 40:31, we see why those who wait on the Lord will mount up with wings like eagles or like in NIV, “soar on wings like eagles“. As we wait on the Lord, we stay inside His thermal column (of grace). In God, we easily soar to greater heights and fly a greater distance without striving and using so much of our strength. That doesn’t mean zero human effort, God gave us wisdom for a reason. Eagles do flap their wings, but they choose to soar or glide when possible.

You trusted your strength and are not soaring?Wait on God. Choose to glide around God. Let Him lift you with His “thermal” energy, His rising air currents.

You trusted God and leaned upon Him, but feel like you are circling at the same spot?Worry not. You are circling around God and now soaring with God.

但仰望耶和华的人必重新得力。
他们必像鹰一样展翅高飞,
他们奔跑也不困倦,
他们行走也不疲乏。

以赛亚书 40:31 (CCB)
